We recently attended the "Best Friends' Festival of the Pet" in Oklahoma City, put on by
Best Friends of the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare Division.
All the time we were there, it was busy with lots of people and pets roaming around.
We ran across this cute little fellow, and just had to take a picture. Unfortunately nobody at the festival was
selling the glasses, or Zeus might have ended up with a pair. I'm sure he would have loved them! (yeah, right).
There were several booths setup dedicated to animal rescue. Seems like there was over a half dozen or more.
I recall one for Pugs, Labs, Grayhounds, even one for horses. I was a little surprised not to see the local IMPS folks there though.
There were several demostrations going on through out the day.
Oklahoma Freestyle Dogs were there, which is basically dogs dancing
with their humans. Pretty neat to watch, but I don't think Zeus would care much for the dancing.
Dallas Dog & Disc Club put on a couple of shows.
Some very acrobatic dogs in that group. A couple of them were a little put off by the carpet they were one, but they all put on a good show regardless.
Oklahoma Search & Rescue Dogs gave a talk and demonstration of what their group does. One of the humans that was part of the group, participated in the
search and rescue after the Murrah Building Bombing in OKC. He and one of the dogs also went to NYC after 9/11.
OKPAWS Agility Club had a good time. The dogs made their humans work to keep
up while they ran through various obstacles, including tubes and seesaws. Zeus probably would have enjoyed that... except I'm not sure he has
enough weight to tip the seesaw over.
All the time the festival was underway, there was also a Flyball tournament going on too. It was an exciting thing to watch,
and I can understand why they were selling earplugs for folks who wanted to watch. Check out our write up.
There were also various contests during the afternoon. There was "Best Dressed", "Best Pet Trick", "Owner Look Alike", and "Best Tail Wag". We missed most of them,
since we were at the Flyball tournament. We did catch the "Best Tail Wag" though.... and we both agree the dog that won had a
secret weapon... his 5 year old human he brought along. Who could NOT award that combo the first place.
We saw a couple of Miniature Pinschers, and explored the various booths the vendors had setup.
Towards the end of the day, they had a blessing of the pets, followed by a pet parade. There were pets of all sizes and types
there to be blessed.
